Watchkeeping
Watchkeeping is the system of rotating duty periods (“watches”) by which a ship is kept safely operated 24 hours a day, at sea and in port. Because a ship never stops, officers and ratings work in shifts so that there is always a competent team on the bridge (navigational watch) and, where required, in the engine room (engineering watch).
The traditional pattern divides the day into watches (classically four-hour periods), with the well-known “four on, eight off” rotation for a three-watch system. The navigational (deck) watch officer is responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, keeping a proper lookout, collision avoidance under the COLREGs, and monitoring the passage plan during their watch. Watchkeeping standards, competence and — importantly — hours of rest to prevent fatigue are governed by the STCW Convention and the MLC. Modern ships may run unmanned machinery spaces (UMS) with periodic engine-room checks rather than a continuous engine watch. Proper watchkeeping is fundamental to safe ship operation, and fatigue in watchkeepers is a recognised safety risk. It is central to how ships are safely run around the clock.

Because tired watchkeepers cause accidents, STCW and the MLC regulate rest hours as tightly as competence. Watchkeeping and the fatigue that threatens it are central to safe navigation.
