Customs & Compliance 🇦🇪 UAE

UAE Free Zone

A UAE free zone is a designated area — such as JAFZA, DAFZA, KIZAD or Hamriyah — where goods can be imported, stored, processed and re-exported with customs duty and VAT suspended, alongside benefits like full foreign ownership and streamlined procedures. For customs purposes, a free zone sits outside the UAE customs territory.

Duty and VAT only arise when goods leave the free zone and enter the UAE mainland (the customs territory) for local consumption; goods that are re-exported from the zone never incur UAE duty. This makes free zones the engine of the UAE's entrepôt and re-export economy, letting companies hold regional stock and trade it onward with minimal friction.

Why it matters

Free zones are why so many regional distributors base themselves in the UAE: they can bring in stock duty- and VAT-free, hold it, and ship it across the Middle East, Africa and South Asia without the cost of formally importing. Understanding the free-zone boundary — and what crossing it into the mainland triggers — is core to UAE trade.

Frequently asked
When does duty apply to free-zone goods?

Only when goods move from the free zone into the UAE mainland for local consumption; re-exported goods incur no UAE duty.

Is a free zone the same as a designated zone?

Not exactly — a designated zone is a free zone that also meets specific criteria to be treated as outside the UAE for VAT purposes on goods.
