Customs & Compliance 🇹🇿 Tanzania

Tanzania VAT

Tanzania VAT is the country's value-added tax, levied on the supply of most goods and services and on imports, administered by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). The standard rate is 18%. On imported goods, VAT is collected by Customs at the border on the customs value plus import duty (and any excise), though registered businesses recover it as input VAT.

Like other VAT systems, it is broadly neutral for business but a real cost to final consumers, with certain supplies zero-rated or exempt. (Note that mainland Tanzania and semi-autonomous Zanzibar have separate VAT administrations.) For companies importing into, selling in or operating in Tanzania, correctly determining VAT on imports and domestic transactions, and accounting for it, is a core tax-compliance requirement handled through customs and ERP systems. Understanding Tanzania VAT is essential to pricing and compliance in the market. It is central to how consumption is taxed in Tanzania.

Why it matters

Tanzania VAT (18%) is collected at the border on imports and applies to domestic supplies, with mainland and Zanzibar administered separately. Getting the rate, import collection and recovery right is a core compliance and pricing task for anyone trading or operating in Tanzania, and a real requirement for customs and ERP systems.
