Customs & Compliance 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia

SFDA (Saudi Food and Drug Authority)

Saudi Food and Drug Authority

The SFDA (Saudi Food and Drug Authority) regulates food, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and cosmetics in Saudi Arabia. Imports of these products require SFDA registration and clearance — obtained through the SFDA's electronic systems, which are integrated with Fasah — before the goods can enter the Kingdom.

Like SASO for general product standards, the SFDA is a clearance gate for the categories it controls: an import of regulated food or medical products cannot be released by customs without the relevant SFDA approval attached to the declaration. It is therefore central to the import path for the food, pharma and medical-device supply chains.

Why it matters

For food, pharma and medical imports, the SFDA — not just customs — decides whether goods enter Saudi Arabia. Registering products and securing SFDA clearance ahead of arrival is what separates a smooth import from perishable or high-value cargo stuck at the border.
