Chief Engineer
The Chief Engineer is the officer in charge of the ship's engine department and is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all the vessel's machinery and technical systems — the main propulsion engine, generators, boilers, pumps, fuel and lube-oil systems, steering gear, refrigeration and more. The Chief Engineer is the technical head aboard, equivalent in rank and standing to the Chief Officer but leading the engine side.
Responsibilities include keeping the machinery reliable and running, managing the planned maintenance system, overseeing the engine crew, managing fuel (bunkers) and lube oil, ensuring compliance with technical and environmental regulations (MARPOL, sludge and bilge management), and controlling spares and the engine budget. The Chief Engineer works closely with the shore technical superintendent and reports to the Master on matters affecting the ship. The role is critical to the vessel's reliability, efficiency and compliance, and sits at the top of the engine-officer career path. It is central to keeping a ship able to sail and earn.
A ship earns only when its machinery runs, and the Chief Engineer is who keeps it running — propulsion, power, and every system aboard, plus the maintenance, fuel and compliance behind them.
