Main Engine

The Main Engine is a ship's primary propulsion machinery — the large engine that turns the propeller (usually via a shaft) to drive the vessel through the water. On most merchant ships it is a large, slow-speed, two-stroke diesel engine directly coupled to the propeller shaft, though medium-speed engines (with a gearbox), dual-fuel engines and other configurations are also used.

The main engine is the heart of the ship's power and its single largest consumer of fuel (bunkers) — making its efficiency central to voyage cost and emissions. It is the focus of much of the ship's planned maintenance (overhauls scheduled by running hours), managed by the engine department under the Chief Engineer. Its condition and reliability directly determine whether the ship can sail. Modern main engines are increasingly electronically controlled and, with the energy transition, adapted to run on alternative fuels (LNG, methanol). The main engine relates closely to the propeller and shaft it drives, the auxiliary engines that power the ship's electrics, and the fuel and maintenance regimes around it. It is fundamental to a ship's ability to move and earn.

Why it matters

The main engine drives the ship and burns most of its fuel, so its efficiency governs voyage cost and emissions, and its reliability governs whether the ship sails at all. It is the focus of the engine department's maintenance and, as fuels change, the centre of the shift to LNG and methanol propulsion. Understanding it is understanding what makes a ship go.
