SFI Group System

SFI Group System

The SFI Group System is a standard classification and coding system that breaks a ship down into a hierarchy of functional groups — main groups, groups and sub-groups covering every system, component and cost account on board. It gives ship managers a common numeric language for organising technical data, maintenance, procurement and cost control.

Widely adopted across ship management, SFI codes tie together the Planned Maintenance System, spare-parts catalogue, procurement and accounting: a pump, its maintenance jobs, its spares and its costs all share the same SFI code, so information can be aggregated consistently across a vessel or a whole fleet. Developed in Norway, it remains the de-facto standard for structuring a ship's technical and cost data.

Why it matters

Without a common code, a ship's maintenance, spares, procurement and cost data live in separate silos that can't be compared. SFI gives every system one identity across all of them — so a manager can see the total cost of a piece of machinery, benchmark it across sister vessels, and structure the PMS and catalogue consistently. It is the quiet backbone of organised ship management.
