IFTDGN
IFTDGN is the UN/EDIFACT message used to notify dangerous goods details for a consignment — the electronic dangerous-goods declaration exchanged between shippers, forwarders, carriers, terminals and port authorities. It carries the UN number, proper shipping name, IMDG class and packing group, quantity, packaging, flashpoint, EmS emergency schedule and stowage/segregation requirements.
IFTDGN is central to safe container and vessel operations: terminals use it to plan compliant stowage and segregation, port authorities to grant hazardous-cargo entry, and carriers to meet their IMDG Code obligations. An accurate, timely dangerous-goods notification is a legal precondition for accepting and loading hazardous cargo.
IFTDGN is how hazardous cargo is declared before it moves. Terminals plan segregation from it, ports authorise entry on it, and carriers meet IMDG rules with it — so a missing or wrong DG notification is not a paperwork slip, it is what stops the box at the gate and, if it slips through, causes fires and incidents at sea.
