Customs & Compliance 🇪🇬 Egypt

Egyptian Customs Authority

The Egyptian Customs Authority (ECA) is Egypt's customs body, responsible for clearing imports and exports, collecting customs duties and import VAT, and enforcing Egypt's trade, licensing and standards controls. It administers Egypt's tariff and, in recent years, has undergone major digital reform centred on the NAFEZA single window and the Advance Cargo Information (ACI) system.

Under the reformed process, importers must be registered and must submit advance cargo data (ACI) before shipment arrival through NAFEZA, and clearance, permits and payments are handled electronically. Many goods also require registration or approval from GOEIC (the General Organization for Export and Import Control) and compliance with Egyptian standards. As a large market and a strategic trade location astride the Suez Canal, Egypt's customs procedures, the ACI requirement and GOEIC controls materially affect the cost and time of trade. For anyone importing into or exporting from Egypt, understanding the Egyptian Customs Authority and NAFEZA/ACI is essential to clearance and compliance. It governs Egypt's borders and trade.

Why it matters

Egyptian Customs governs all Egypt trade, and its recent digital overhaul — the NAFEZA single window with mandatory Advance Cargo Information before arrival, plus GOEIC registration — reshaped how goods clear. For importers into this large, Suez-adjacent market, understanding the ECA and the ACI/NAFEZA requirements is fundamental to clearance and avoiding cargo holds.
