ECDIS
ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) is the shipboard navigation system that displays official electronic navigational charts (ENCs) integrated with the ship's position and sensor data (GPS, radar, AIS, gyro, log). Approved ECDIS meeting IMO performance standards can serve as the legal equivalent of paper charts, and its carriage is now mandatory under SOLAS for most commercial ships, marking the shift to electronic navigation.
ECDIS continuously shows the vessel's position on the chart, and provides powerful safety tools: route planning and monitoring, automatic alarms for dangers (shallow water, hazards, approaching the planned track limits), and overlay of radar and AIS targets.
