Contract Management

Contract Management is the process of managing contracts throughout their entire life cycle — from drafting and negotiation, through execution and day-to-day administration, to renewal, variation or closure. It ensures both parties meet their obligations, that the value negotiated at signing is actually realised in delivery, and that risks, changes and disputes are handled properly.

Key activities include maintaining a central contract repository, tracking obligations, milestones, KPIs and SLAs, managing renewals and expiries, controlling variations and change requests, and monitoring supplier performance and compliance. Weak contract management is where negotiated savings quietly leak away — through missed renewal dates, unenforced terms, scope creep and auto-renewals — so it is as important as the sourcing that created the contract. It works closely with supplier relationship management (managing the relationship) and is increasingly supported by contract-lifecycle-management software that centralises documents, automates alerts and surfaces obligations. Effective contract management protects value and reduces risk across an organisation's agreements.

Why it matters

Savings are won at signing but lost in the drawer — missed renewals, unenforced terms and quiet scope creep leak the value a good deal captured. Contract management is what protects that value across the contract's life, tracking obligations, renewals and performance. It matters as much as the sourcing that created the contract, which is why CLM tooling has become essential.

Frequently asked
What does contract management cover?

The whole contract life cycle — creation, execution, tracking obligations and KPIs, managing variations and renewals, and closure.

Why does contract management matter?

Negotiated value leaks away without it — through missed renewals, unenforced terms and scope creep — so it protects the savings sourcing created.
