Actuator
A device that converts a control signal into physical action — moving, opening or operating something.

Cloud Computing
Delivering computing — servers, storage, software — on demand over the internet, instead of running it locally.

Edge Computing
Processing data close to where it is generated, at the network edge, rather than sending it all to a central cloud.
Edge Device
A device at the edge of the network that generates or processes data close to the source, such as a sensor or gateway.
Edge of IoT
The outer boundary of an IoT system, where physical sensors and devices meet the network.
EnOcean
An energy-harvesting wireless technology for battery-free IoT sensors and switches.

Gateway (IoT)
A device that connects IoT sensors and devices to the wider network or cloud, bridging and translating protocols.
Geotagging
Adding geographic location data (coordinates) to an asset, photo, record or event as metadata.

Internet of Things (IoT)Internet of Things
A network of physical devices with sensors and connectivity that collect and exchange data automatically.
IP (Internet Protocol)Internet Protocol
The fundamental protocol that addresses and routes data packets across networks and the internet.
IPv6Internet Protocol version 6
The latest version of the Internet Protocol, with a vastly larger address space for the growing number of connected devices.

Microcontroller
A small self-contained computer on a single chip that controls a device and its sensors and actuators.
Modbus
A long-established industrial communication protocol for connecting controllers, sensors and equipment.
MQTTMessage Queuing Telemetry Transport
A lightweight publish/subscribe messaging protocol widely used for IoT device communication.

SaaS (Software as a Service)Software as a Service
Software delivered over the internet as a subscription service, hosted and maintained by the provider.
Sensor
A device that detects a physical property — temperature, location, vibration — and converts it into data.
Single Sign-On (SSO)Single Sign-On
An authentication method letting users access multiple systems with one set of login credentials.
