Bow Thruster
A Bow Thruster is a transverse (sideways) propeller mounted in a tunnel through the ship's bow, below the waterline, that pushes the bow to port or starboard to help manoeuvre the vessel at low or zero speed. Because the rudder is ineffective when the ship is barely moving, the bow thruster provides the sideways control needed for berthing, unberthing and manoeuvring in confined waters.
By moving the bow directly, a bow thruster lets a ship turn on the spot or move sideways alongside a berth, greatly improving manoeuvrability and often reducing (though not always eliminating) the need for tug assistance. Larger vessels may also have a stern thruster for full sideways control. Thrusters are commonly electrically driven (adding to the auxiliary power demand). They are widely fitted to ships that dock frequently or need precise handling — ferries, cruise ships, offshore vessels and many modern merchant ships. The bow thruster complements the rudder and propeller for close-quarters work, and is important to safe, efficient port manoeuvring. It is a key aid to ship handling.
