Air Charter
An Air Charter is the hire of an entire aircraft for a specific cargo movement, instead of booking space on scheduled belly or freighter services. Arranged through charter brokers or airlines, it gives the shipper dedicated capacity, routing and timing — the aircraft flies where and when the cargo needs, direct.
Cargo charters are used when scheduled capacity is unavailable, insufficient or too slow: urgent and time-critical shipments (AOG aircraft-on-ground spares, emergency relief, event logistics), outsized or heavy project cargo needing special aircraft (such as the giant Antonov freighters), and surges when belly capacity is scarce. Charters are far more expensive per shipment but buy speed, control and capability that scheduled services cannot. Understanding when a charter is justified — and how it is priced and arranged — is part of managing urgent and specialised air logistics.
When cargo absolutely has to move — a grounded aircraft's spare part, disaster relief, an outsized turbine — an air charter buys dedicated speed and capability that no scheduled flight can. It is expensive but decisive, and knowing when it's justified (and roughly what it costs) is key to handling the most urgent and specialised air shipments.
