Warehouse Control System (WCS)
A Warehouse Control System (WCS) is software that directs and coordinates the automated material-handling equipment on the warehouse floor in real time — conveyors, sorters, AS/RS, carousels, print-and-apply and robotics. It acts as the real-time execution layer between the Warehouse Management System (WMS) and the physical machines, translating the WMS's instructions into the precise, time-critical commands each piece of equipment needs.
Where the WMS manages inventory, orders and what needs to happen, the WCS orchestrates how the automation actually does it — routing totes across conveyors and sorters, sequencing AS/RS moves, balancing workloads and reacting instantly to conditions on the floor. As warehouses automate, the WCS becomes essential to making diverse equipment work together smoothly and to maximising throughput. It is a key software layer in the automated distribution centre, sitting beneath the WMS and above the machines.
