Total Loss (Marine Insurance)

A Total Loss in marine insurance is a claim in which the insured ship or cargo is entirely lost or effectively destroyed. It takes two forms: an Actual Total Loss (ATL), where the property is completely destroyed, gone, or so damaged it ceases to be the thing insured (a ship that sinks, cargo that perishes); and a Constructive Total Loss (CTL), where the property is not entirely destroyed but its rescue, repair or recovery would cost more than its value, so it is reasonably abandoned.

In a CTL, the insured gives notice of abandonment to the insurer and, if accepted, claims as for a total loss, with the insurer taking over any residual value (through subrogation). The distinction matters because it determines whether and how a full-value claim is paid. Total loss (as opposed to a partial loss / average) is one of the fundamental concepts of marine insurance, shaping how the biggest claims on hull and cargo policies are settled.
