Total Cost of Ownership

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is the complete cost of acquiring, operating and disposing of a product or service over its whole life, not just its purchase price. It captures the many costs that come after the buy — delivery, installation, training, energy and consumables, maintenance and spares, downtime, quality and failure costs, financing, and end-of-life disposal — as well as acquisition costs.

TCO matters because the cheapest to buy is often not the cheapest to own: a low purchase price can hide high running or failure costs, while a dearer, more reliable option may cost far less over its life. Used in strategic sourcing, supplier selection and investment decisions, TCO analysis forces a like-for-like comparison on true lifetime value rather than sticker price. It is especially important for capital equipment, machinery and long-life assets (including ships and their systems), where operating and maintenance costs dwarf the purchase price. TCO is a foundational concept in professional procurement and value-based buying.
