Terminal Operating System

A Terminal Operating System (TOS) is the software that plans, directs and tracks the movement and storage of containers and cargo within a port or inland terminal. It manages the whole flow: vessel stowage planning, yard and berth planning, gate operations, equipment (crane, straddle carrier, RTG) dispatch, and container inventory — deciding where every box goes and directing the machines and people that move it.

A good TOS is what lets a modern terminal handle thousands of moves a day with high productivity and accuracy — optimising yard slots to minimise re-handling, sequencing crane and equipment work, and giving real-time visibility of every container. It integrates with shipping lines, customs, the gate and increasingly with automation and terminal IoT. For depots and smaller terminals, equivalent yard and depot-management systems play the same role on a smaller scale.
