Tautliner (Curtain-Sider)
A Tautliner — generically a curtain-sider — is a truck or trailer whose sides are made of a tensioned, sliding fabric curtain rather than rigid panels. The curtains can be quickly drawn back along the length of the vehicle to give full, open access to the load bed from either side, combining the weather protection of a box trailer with the easy side-loading of a flatbed.
This makes tautliners extremely versatile and popular for general road freight and palletised cargo: a forklift can load or unload pallets from the side at any point, which is far faster and more flexible than loading only through rear doors. They are widely used for distribution and less-than-truckload work. The trade-off versus a rigid box is less security and less structural strength (curtains offer limited protection against theft or crushing), and heavy or high-value loads may need a hard-sided trailer. Tautliners are one of the most common trailer types in road freight, valued for the speed and flexibility of curtain-side loading. (“Tautliner” originated as a brand name now used generically.)
