Stevedoring
Stevedoring is the work of loading and unloading cargo onto and off ships at the port or terminal. The workers who do it are stevedores (or longshoremen), and the company that supplies the labour, supervision and often the equipment is the stevedore or terminal operator. It covers operating quay cranes, driving forklifts and reach-stackers, lashing and unlashing containers, and handling break-bulk and bulk cargo in the hold and on the quay.
Stevedoring is central to a ship's port stay and turnaround: how fast and safely cargo is worked determines how long the vessel is in port, which drives cost and schedule. It is priced through stevedoring tariffs and charges that appear in the cost of a port call, and it involves significant safety and cargo-care responsibilities — improper handling causes cargo damage and injuries. Efficient stevedoring, correct tallying and clean cargo handling are key to both terminal productivity and the shipping line's economics.
A ship earns only when it is moving, and stevedoring decides how long it sits at the berth. Fast, safe cargo handling shortens the port stay and cuts cost; slow or careless work delays the vessel and damages cargo. What is the difference between a stevedore and a longshoreman?
They largely overlap; traditionally stevedores work cargo in the ship's hold while longshoremen work it on the dock, but the terms are often used interchangeably.
