Sortation System

A Sortation System is automated equipment that identifies items moving along a conveyor and diverts each to its correct destination — a chute, lane, packing station, truck door or delivery route. Items are identified by barcode or RFID scanning, and mechanisms such as sliding shoes, cross-belts, tilt-trays, pop-up wheels or narrow-belt diverters push or route each one to the right place at high speed.

Sortation is critical wherever large volumes must be separated quickly and accurately: parcel hubs, e-commerce fulfilment centres, and distribution centres use it to sort thousands of items per hour by order, destination or carrier. It underpins fast order fulfilment, cross-docking and parcel routing, directly driving throughput and accuracy. High-speed cross-belt and tilt-tray sorters handle the biggest volumes in parcel and e-commerce operations. Coordinated by the warehouse control system, sortation is a core automation technology of high-throughput logistics, and one of the most visible symbols of the automated distribution and parcel networks that fast e-commerce delivery depends on.

Why it matters

Getting thousands of parcels an hour to the right chute, truck or route is what makes fast e-commerce and parcel delivery possible — and sortation systems are the high-speed machines that do it. They drive the throughput and accuracy of every fulfilment and parcel hub, making sortation one of the defining automation technologies behind modern delivery networks.
