Slotting
Slotting is the practice of deciding where each product should be stored in a warehouse to maximise picking efficiency and make the best use of space. It assigns items to locations based on factors such as pick frequency (velocity), size and weight, product affinity (items often ordered together), and handling needs — typically placing fast-moving items in the most accessible “golden zone” locations to minimise travel and effort.
Effective slotting can dramatically cut the walking and handling time that dominates picking labour, reduce congestion, and improve ergonomics and accuracy. Because demand patterns change, slotting is periodically re-optimised (re-slotting) as product velocities shift, often using analytics within the warehouse management system. Slotting works hand in hand with putaway (which executes the placement) and picking (which benefits from it), and is one of the highest-leverage ways to improve warehouse productivity without new equipment.
Walking and handling dominate picking labour, and slotting attacks it directly — putting the fast movers where they're quickest to reach can cut picking time sharply with no new equipment.
