Port of Tauranga

The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand's largest port and its principal export and container gateway, on the North Island's Bay of Plenty. It handles the biggest share of the country's containerised and bulk trade, including major export flows of dairy, forestry (logs and timber), kiwifruit and other primary produce that drive New Zealand's trade-dependent economy.

Tauranga's deep water and efficiency have made it the country's leading port, connected to the interior (including Auckland) by road and rail, and serving as a hub with a strong reefer (refrigerated) capability for New Zealand's perishable exports. Together with the Port of Auckland (serving the main population centre) and others, it anchors New Zealand's port system. For shippers trading with New Zealand — especially exporters of primary produce — Tauranga is often the key port of loading or discharge, and its capacity and reefer handling are central to the country's export trade. Understanding it is central to planning New Zealand trade. It is the maritime gateway of New Zealand's export economy.
