Port of Santos

The Port of Santos is the largest port in Latin America and Brazil's principal maritime gateway, on the coast of São Paulo state, serving the country's industrial and agricultural heartland. It handles a large share of Brazil's foreign trade — containers, and huge volumes of agricultural and bulk exports such as soybeans, sugar, coffee, grains, and also fuels and chemicals — reflecting Brazil's role as an agricultural export powerhouse.

Santos is the key port of loading for Brazil's commodity exports and port of discharge for much of its imports, connected to the São Paulo region and interior by road and rail. Its scale, and any congestion (notably during peak harvest/export seasons), affect Brazilian and global commodity supply chains. As the dominant node in Brazilian trade, Santos is central to planning shipments to and from Brazil and to the country's agricultural export flows. Understanding the Port of Santos is essential to Brazilian and South American logistics. It is the maritime gateway of the Brazilian economy and the leading port of Latin America.

Why it matters

Santos is Latin America's largest port and Brazil's main gateway — the loading point for the country's vast soybean, sugar, coffee and grain exports and much of its imports. Its capacity and harvest-season congestion move global commodity supply chains, making it central to planning Brazilian trade and understanding South American logistics.
