Port of Los Angeles / Long Beach

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, adjacent in San Pedro Bay in Southern California, together form the busiest container port complex in North America and the primary US gateway for trade with Asia. Though separate ports, they are usually considered together (the “San Pedro Bay ports”) and handle a large share of all US containerized imports.

The complex is the critical entry point for the enormous flow of goods from Asia into the US market, feeding a vast network of warehouses, distribution centers and rail/road links across Southern California and the rest of the country. Its scale makes it a bellwether for US trade and supply-chain health — congestion at LA/Long Beach (as during the pandemic, with ships anchored offshore) can ripple across the entire US economy. For importers and forwarders bringing goods from Asia to the US, the LA/Long Beach complex is often the key port of discharge, and its throughput, congestion and drayage/rail capacity are central to trans-Pacific supply chains. Understanding it is essential to US import logistics. It is the great western gateway of US trade.

Why it matters

LA/Long Beach is the busiest container gateway in North America and the main door for Asian goods into the US — a bellwether for US trade whose congestion (ships anchored offshore in the pandemic) can ripple across the whole economy. For trans-Pacific imports it is usually the port of discharge, central to US import logistics.

Frequently asked
Why is the LA/Long Beach complex so important?

Together the two adjacent ports form North America's busiest container gateway and the primary US entry point for trade with Asia.

Why does its congestion matter?

It handles a huge share of US container imports, so backups there (like the pandemic ship queues) ripple across US supply chains.
