Supply Chain & Inventory

Order Fulfillment

Order Fulfillment is the complete process of getting a customer's order from placement to delivery — receiving the order, locating and picking the items, packing them, shipping via the right carrier, and handling any returns. It is the operational heart of retail and e-commerce logistics, where inventory, warehousing and transport come together to satisfy demand.

Fulfillment can be run in-house, outsourced to a 3PL, or handled through models like drop-shipping or marketplace fulfillment (e.g. FBA). Its performance is measured by speed, accuracy (order and inventory accuracy) and cost per order, and modern expectations — same/next-day delivery, easy returns — make efficient fulfillment a competitive differentiator. It relies on warehouse processes like pick-and-pack, putaway and slotting and on accurate inventory, all typically coordinated by a warehouse or order-management system. Order fulfillment is where a sale becomes a delivered product.

Why it matters

Fulfillment is where the customer promise is kept or broken — the speed, accuracy and cost of turning an order into a delivered parcel now decide whether shoppers come back. As same-day delivery and free returns became the norm, efficient fulfillment shifted from back-office chore to competitive weapon, making it central to retail and e-commerce logistics.
