Land Bridge

A Land Bridge is an intermodal arrangement that uses an overland route — usually rail — to bridge between two ocean voyages, so that containers cross a landmass by rail instead of the ship sailing all the way around it. It substitutes a faster or shorter land leg for part of an all-water route.

Classic examples include the North American land bridge (containers from Asia railed across the US/Canada between the Pacific and Atlantic/Gulf coasts, rather than transiting the Panama Canal) and the Eurasian land bridge (rail corridors carrying containers between China and Europe, a middle option between fast-but-costly air and slow-but-cheap sea). Related terms are the mini land bridge (sea-rail to an inland or opposite-coast point) and micro land bridge. Land bridges can offer shorter transit times, relief from canal constraints or congestion, and alternative routings, at a cost and reliability that depend on the rail infrastructure. They are a strategic element of global intermodal routing and depend on efficient rail freight, double-stack capability and border/customs transit. Understanding land bridges is useful for grasping how containers move via combined sea and rail across continents.

Why it matters

A land bridge can cut days off a container's journey by railing it across a continent instead of sailing around it — dodging canal constraints and congestion. From the trans-US route to the China–Europe rail corridors, land bridges are a strategic routing choice balancing speed, cost and reliability, and they show how sea and rail combine to move boxes across the globe.
