Internet Protocol version 6

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the latest version of the Internet Protocol, developed to succeed IPv4 primarily to solve the exhaustion of available IP addresses. Where IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (about 4.3 billion, now effectively used up), IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, providing an almost unimaginably vast address space — enough to give a unique address to every device many times over.

This huge address space is essential for the Internet of Things, where billions of sensors, trackers, gateways and connected devices each need to be addressable — a scale IPv4 simply cannot accommodate. Beyond addressing, IPv6 also brings improvements in routing efficiency, autoconfiguration and built-in security. Adoption has been gradual, with IPv4 and IPv6 coexisting during a long transition. For connected logistics and IoT, IPv6 is important because it enables the massive scale of device connectivity that smart cargo, vessels and supply chains increasingly rely on.
