GS1-128
GS1-128 is a barcode standard, based on the Code 128 symbology, used to carry GS1 data on shipping cartons, pallets and logistics labels. Its distinctive feature is the use of Application Identifiers (AIs) — short prefixes that tell the scanner what each piece of data means — so a single barcode can carry the SSCC, the GTIN, a batch or lot number, best-before and production dates, quantities and more.
GS1-128 is the workhorse of the logistics label: the SSCC in a GS1-128 barcode on a pallet links it to its advance shipping notice, and the batch and date AIs support traceability and recall. It is distinct from the retail EAN/UPC barcode used at the point of sale.
GS1-128 lets one barcode carry not just an identity but the batch, dates and quantities that logistics and traceability need — all self-describing through application identifiers. That is what makes automated goods receipt, pallet tracking and recall by batch possible from a single scan on the logistics label.
