Gateway (IoT)
An IoT Gateway is a device that connects local IoT sensors and devices to the wider network, cloud or enterprise systems, acting as the bridge between the two. Because sensors and devices often use short-range or specialised communication (Bluetooth, Zigbee, EnOcean, Modbus, LoRa), the gateway collects their data, translates between protocols, and forwards it — typically over the internet using protocols like MQTT — to cloud or edge platforms, and relays commands back.
Beyond connectivity, modern gateways provide local aggregation, filtering, buffering and often edge processing and security: they can pre-process or reduce data close to the source (a form of edge computing), store data if the connection drops, and secure the link. In logistics and shipping, gateways aggregate the data from many sensors on a vessel, in a yard, in a warehouse or on cargo and relay it to the monitoring platform. The gateway is a critical node in IoT architecture — the point where the edge of the IoT meets the network — enabling large numbers of diverse devices to be connected reliably and securely. It is essential to practical, scalable IoT deployments.
Sensors speak many short-range, incompatible protocols and can't reach the cloud alone — the gateway is what bridges them, translating and forwarding their data (and often pre-processing it at the edge). It is the critical junction where the edge of the IoT meets the network, and it is what makes connecting many diverse devices on a ship, yard or warehouse actually workable and secure.
