Empty Container Depot

An Empty Container Depot is a facility, usually inland or near a port, where empty shipping containers are stored, inspected, maintained, repaired and cleaned between cargo movements. After an import container is unpacked, the empty is returned to a depot; when an exporter needs a box, it is released from the depot — so the depot is the buffer that manages the pool of empty equipment.

Depot operations include gate-in/gate-out with condition inspection (recorded on the EIR), damage assessment and repair, cleaning (including for food-grade or hazardous residues), pre-trip inspection of reefers, and stacking and inventory of empties by type and owner. Efficient depots are vital to the container system because empty repositioning and availability are major costs and constraints — boxes must be where exporters need them. Depots handle equipment for shipping lines and leasing companies, and their operations (inventory, condition, release, billing) are managed by container depot / yard software. The empty depot is a critical, often overlooked node keeping containers circulating through global trade.

Why it matters

Containers spend much of their life empty, and getting an empty box to the exporter who needs it is a major cost and headache — the empty depot is the buffer that makes it work, storing, inspecting and repairing boxes between uses. Efficient depots keep the container pool circulating, which is exactly what container-depot software exists to manage.
