CUSDEC

Customs Declaration Message

CUSDEC is the UN/EDIFACT message used by declarants — importers, exporters, customs brokers and freight forwarders — to lodge a formal customs declaration with the authorities. It carries the full goods declaration: consignor and consignee, HS/tariff codes, customs value, country of origin, package and weight details, the customs procedure requested (import, export, transit, warehousing) and the duties and taxes calculation.

CUSDEC is the message behind electronic customs clearance worldwide — it feeds national single-window and customs systems. The authority replies with a CUSRES message indicating acceptance, a query, or release of the goods. Modern customs software generates the CUSDEC from the shipment and commercial-invoice data, transmits it through the relevant gateway, and processes the CUSRES response.

Why it matters

CUSDEC is the electronic customs entry — the declaration that must be lodged and accepted before goods can be cleared. Generating it accurately from the shipment and invoice data, and handling the CUSRES reply, is the core of any customs-clearance workflow; a rejected CUSDEC holds the whole consignment.
