CODECO
CODECO is the UN/EDIFACT message that a container terminal or inland depot sends to the shipping line (or the container's operator) to report gate and quay movements: a container gated in or out by truck or rail, or lifted on/off. Each report carries the container number, ISO size/type, full/empty status, the move type and the timestamp.
CODECO is the backbone of container inventory and empty-equipment management. Lines reconcile where every box is from the stream of CODECO reports; depots use it to bill storage and handling; and the message triggers the demurrage and detention clocks that determine whether a customer is charged for holding a container too long.
Like COPRAR and COARRI, CODECO is published by SMDG (Shipping Message Design Group).
CODECO is how a depot or terminal tells the line "this box just crossed the gate". It keeps the line's container inventory accurate in real time, drives empty-equipment repositioning, and starts the detention and demurrage clocks — so an accurate CODECO feed is what makes free-time billing correct instead of a dispute.
