Category Management

Category Management is a procurement approach that segments an organisation's spend into categories of similar or related goods and services — for example IT, logistics, packaging, marine spares, professional services — and manages each with a dedicated, tailored strategy run by a category specialist with deep knowledge of that supply market.

Treating each category strategically lets the buyer consolidate demand, understand the specific supply market and its risks, apply the right sourcing approach, and build the right supplier relationships for that category, rather than buying everything the same generic way. It draws on spend analysis to size and prioritise categories and tools like the Kraljic matrix to decide the right strategy for each (leverage, strategic, bottleneck, routine). Category management is a core structure of modern strategic procurement — it focuses expertise and effort where they yield the most value and produces category strategies that consistently lower cost and manage risk across the whole spend portfolio.

Why it matters

Buying IT the same way you buy freight or bolts wastes the chance to apply market-specific expertise — category management fixes that by giving each spend area its own specialist and strategy. It concentrates effort where value is greatest and, guided by spend analysis and the Kraljic matrix, produces category strategies that steadily cut cost and manage risk across the portfolio.
