Block Train (Unit Train)
A Block Train (or unit train) is a freight train that travels as a single, fixed set of wagons from one origin to one destination without being split up or re-marshalled at intermediate yards along the way. Typically it carries a single commodity or a single customer's cargo (bulk goods, or a solid block of containers) point to point.
By avoiding the time-consuming marshalling (shunting and re-sorting of wagons) that conventional wagonload freight requires, block trains achieve faster transit, higher reliability and lower cost — they run like a shuttle between two terminals. This makes them ideal for high-volume, regular flows: coal or ore from mine to port, or containers between a port and an inland terminal (a container block train). The trade-off is that they need enough volume to fill a whole train on a consistent route. Block trains are central to efficient bulk and intermodal rail operations and to reliable port-hinterland container corridors. They relate closely to rail freight, double-stack and dry ports.
Splitting and re-sorting wagons at yards is where rail loses time and reliability — the block train skips all of it, running full and direct like a shuttle. That makes it the efficient backbone of bulk flows and port-hinterland container corridors, provided the volume exists to fill a whole train. It is key to why rail can be fast and dependable for the right traffic.
