Backhaul

Backhaul is cargo carried on the return leg of a transport journey — filling capacity that would otherwise travel empty after the outbound (fronthaul) load is delivered. It applies across modes: a truck finding a load for its trip home, a ship picking up cargo to avoid a ballast voyage, or a container being filled on the weaker return direction of a trade lane.

Because the return capacity would otherwise be wasted, backhaul cargo is often carried at a lower rate — any revenue helps offset the cost of moving the empty vehicle or box back. On imbalanced trade lanes (where far more cargo flows one way), the headhaul/backhaul rate gap can be large, and finding backhaul loads is a major way carriers and shippers improve utilisation, cut empty running, reduce cost and lower emissions. Backhaul optimisation is central to road-freight efficiency, container repositioning, and ship deployment alike. Reducing empty miles by securing backhauls is one of the most practical levers on transport cost and sustainability across the supply chain.
