Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)

Autonomous Mobile Robot

An Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) is a self-navigating robot that moves goods and assists tasks around a warehouse or facility without fixed guide paths. Using onboard sensors, cameras, LiDAR and mapping software (SLAM), an AMR builds and understands a map of its surroundings and plans its own routes in real time, dynamically avoiding obstacles and people and adapting when the layout or task changes.

This flexibility is the key advance over the fixed-path AGV: AMRs need no floor wires or tracks, can be deployed and re-tasked quickly, and work collaboratively with human pickers — for example following or leading order-pickers, carrying totes, and taking picked goods to packing (“follow-me” and zone-picking models). AMRs have surged in warehouses and fulfilment centres because they boost picking productivity with lower cost and disruption than fixed automation, and scale up or down easily. They are a fast-growing pillar of flexible warehouse automation, especially valuable for the high-variability, high-throughput demands of e-commerce fulfilment.

Why it matters

AMRs brought automation to warehouses without the cost and rigidity of fixed infrastructure — self-navigating robots that dodge people, re-task on the fly, and boost picking by working alongside humans. That flexibility and scalability is why they have surged in e-commerce fulfilment, and it marks the shift from fixed (AGV) to adaptable robotic materials handling.
