Actuator
An Actuator is a device that converts an electronic control signal into physical action — producing movement or operating a mechanism. It is the output counterpart of the sensor: where a sensor takes information from the physical world, an actuator acts on it, for example by opening or closing a valve, driving a motor, switching a relay, moving a robotic arm, or adjusting a damper.
Actuators are essential to automation and control in IoT and industrial systems: a control system (or a microcontroller), often responding to sensor data, commands an actuator to make something happen. In logistics and shipping this underlies automated warehouse equipment, robotics, reefer and HVAC control, and shipboard machinery control — where, for instance, a temperature sensor's reading can trigger an actuator to adjust cooling. Together, sensors (input) and actuators (output) form the basis of the closed-loop control that lets connected systems not only monitor but act. Actuators turn the decisions of automated and IoT systems into real-world effect, and are a fundamental building block of industrial automation and smart equipment.
Monitoring is only half of automation — something has to act. The actuator is that something, turning a system's command into physical action: a valve opens, a motor runs, cooling adjusts.
