PSA Singapore (Port of Singapore Authority)
PSA Singapore is the principal container terminal operator in Singapore and the flagship of PSA International. Originally the statutory Port of Singapore Authority, the port operations were corporatised in 1997 — today PSA is the terminal operator, while the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) is the regulator.
PSA operates Singapore's container terminals (historically at Tanjong Pagar, Keppel, Brani and Pasir Panjang, now consolidating into Tuas), handling tens of millions of TEU a year. Because most of that cargo is transhipped rather than local, PSA Singapore is the world's largest transhipment hub operator, connected to hundreds of ports worldwide.
When people say "the Port of Singapore" they usually mean PSA's terminals. Its scale and connectivity — more shipping lines and services than almost anywhere — are why a box can reach nearly any port in the world via Singapore. Knowing PSA's terminals, systems and moves (like the shift to Tuas) is knowing how Singapore's port works.
Is PSA the same as the Port of Singapore Authority?
PSA grew out of the former statutory Port of Singapore Authority; since 1997 it is the corporatised terminal operator, with MPA taking on the regulatory role.
